Obtaining a teaching licence

A driving instructor’s licence may be granted to a person aged 25 or over to provide driving instruction, provided they have held a driving licence of the relevant category for at least five years. The licence is always personal.

When assessing an application for a teaching licence, Traficom evaluates the teacher’s suitability on the basis of information obtained from various official registers.

A teaching licence permits the holder to teach only the pupils named on the licence. Two pupils may be named on the same licence, but in that case they must be close relatives of the teacher.

So, if you are teaching your own child and a friend of theirs, you will need two learner’s permits. You can apply for a learner’s permit via Traficom’s online service or at an Ajovarma office.

When giving driving lessons, the learner driver is the driver in charge on the road

Equipment of the training vehicle

Legal requirements for learner vehicles:

– A standard passenger car or a Class B van

– A separate teaching guide for the teacher

– A white triangular sign on the rear of the car, with sides measuring 16–25 cm.

– An external mirror for the teacher.

Many garages carry out pedal installations, and a pedal fitted by a professional ensures safety on the road. When planning a pedal installation, it is important to remember that the pedal is a mandatory safety feature and must function reliably throughout the entire training period, as well as during the driving test.

The additional brake pedal must not interfere with the operation of the car’s own brake pedal in any way.

The examiner always checks that the pedals are working properly before the driving test begins, and a correctly fitted and functioning pedal is a prerequisite for being allowed to take the test. The police may also check that the pedals are working during separate inspections.

Learning to drive in an automatic car?

You can also complete your driving lessons in an automatic vehicle. If you take your driving test in an automatic vehicle, a special endorsement will be added to your driving licence, meaning that the licence will only authorise you to drive automatic vehicles.

Driving lessons

With a learner’s permit, you can complete the compulsory driving lessons, but before starting driving lessons, you must complete the EAS theory course at a driving school (training for first-time driving licence applicants). Risk management training must be completed at a driving school before the driving test.

We offer a ready-made Learner’s Permit Package for those studying for their driving licence under a learner’s permit, which includes all the lessons to be completed at the driving school. We also offer more comprehensive training packages, which include, for example, a practice driving test, as well as additional driving lessons at the driving school to improve your driving skills.

However, research shows that you’ll get the best learning experience by combining lessons under a teaching permit with a driving school’s B-category course packages. For example, you can purchase a driving school’s minimum course package from us and reinforce what you’ve learnt in the curriculum with driving lessons taken under a learner’s permit. All our B-course packages include EAS and risk management training.

We provide all the necessary services and support to help you obtain your driving licence under a learner’s permit, ensuring that every step of the process runs smoothly and safely. 💎

Teaching under a teaching licence

When starting driving lessons, it is important to remember that the instructor is responsible for ensuring that the learner is sufficiently prepared to take the wheel. When giving lessons, the instructor is the driver in charge on the road.

There are 10 hours of compulsory instruction. However, it is recommended that you practise various skills in traffic through repetition over a greater number of driving hours. There is no limit on the amount of driving instruction that can be given in a single day, nor is the content of the lessons specifically defined.

Progress in teaching is recorded on the teaching card (form E505sr).

Once the practical driving lessons have been completed, this is recorded on the training and examination certificate (form E100). The certificate must be presented when sitting the theory and practical tests.

If you wish to improve your skills in specific areas of driving, we also offer individual driving lessons, driving lesson packages, training for learner drivers, or, for example, practice driving tests for those studying for their driving licence under a learner’s permit.

Driving licence

The learner must hold a valid driving licence before booking the theory and practical tests.

It is possible to start driving lessons before your driving licence application has been approved; however, it is recommended that you submit your application well in advance to ensure it is processed before you book your theory test.

A Category B driving licence may be issued no earlier than two years before the applicant reaches the required age.

Driver’s licences

Let’s get testing!

Theory test

The theory test must be taken at an Ajovarma office no earlier than one month before the applicant reaches the minimum age requirement for a driving licence. Before taking the theory test, the compulsory theory lessons must have been completed and the application for a driving licence must have been approved.

It’s worth practising thoroughly for the theory test. In addition to the compulsory EAS theory lessons, both our B-course and our learner driver training programmes include a wide range of self-study materials, as well as a theory test practice programme.

You must bring proof of identity with you to the theory test. If you are taking your theory lessons with us, details of the theory lessons you have completed will be transferred electronically from our student system; alternatively, you can present a certificate directly from our website on your mobile device when you go to take the theory test.

Driving test

To book a driving test, you must have completed the compulsory driving lessons and passed the theory test. You must also be at least 18 years old.

You must bring proof of identity and the E100 form, signed by your instructor, to the driving test. It is also advisable to bring your learner driver card (form E505sr) to the test.
