Driving licence permit
In the early stages of driving school, you must obtain a driving licence permit. The permit is valid for three years at a time.
You need a driving licence permit before you can register for a driver's examination.
A driving licence permit may be issued no earlier than one year before the applicant meets the age requirement corresponding to the category of driving licence. However, a category B driving licence may be issued no earlier than two years before the age requirement is met.
A driving licence permit must also be applied for separately when the driving licence is increased and renewed.
Please note that when upgrading to category A, it is not possible to apply for a driving licence electronically, but you must apply to Driving Safety at the same time as you present your course certificate.

You're going to need to go with you:
– Your current driving licence (if you do not already have a driving licence, take a passport/photo ID card with you to prove your identity).
– 2 passport photos. However, you do not need new passport photos if you already have a valid passport/driving licence. However, when applying for a permit, there is also a good opportunity to update the image.

Apply for a driving licence authorisation electronically on Traficom's website.
Please note the terms of the application for an electronic permit:
- To apply for a driving licence permit authorisation online, you must have a face image in electronic form and an up-to-date autograph in the official register, as well as be able to authenticate yourself to the service with online banking credentials or a mobile certificate.
- You will see a usable picture and autograph after logging in to the service.
- A facial image and an autograph are available in the service if you have a valid passport or ID card.
Group 2 application for a driving licence (C1, C1E, CE,D1,D1E,D or DE)

You're going to need to go with you:
– Your current driving licence (if you do not already have a driving licence, take a passport/photo ID card with you to prove your identity)
– 2 passport photos. However, you do not need new passport photos if you already have a valid passport/driving licence/photo ID card, or you have submitted the photos for a driving, driver or professional qualification card, ADR, or taxi driver's licence on or after 1 January 2013. However, when applying for a permit, there is also a good opportunity to update the image.
– Medical report. If you are under the age of 44.5 years of age in a valid group 2 driver's license renewalr, you will not need a medical report.
